Storytelling is my superpower, and I delight in helping organizations develop a content strategy plan that aligns with institutional goals and messaging and showcases their mission and values.
Throughout my 15-year career in higher ed marketing and communications, I have led the development of countless tools and products, including institutional websites, print magazines and brochures, a digital storytelling magazine, social media and email marketing campaigns, and a podcast (a step outside my comfort zone!). A product is only as useful as its reach, and I love strategizing about how to deliver key pieces of content to the laps of desired audiences in a way that moves, amuses, or motivates them, all the while setting benchmarks and precise methods of evaluation.
I earned bachelor’s degrees in English and Communication Studies from Virginia Tech, and went to work as an editorial assistant and staff writer for The Roanoke Times right after college. I later earned a master’s degree in creative writing (MFA) from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and a master’s degree in natural resources (MNR) from Virginia Tech, where I periodically teach a graduate-level course focused on environmental communication and leadership.
Throughout my career, I have had the pleasure of traipsing around moonlit Panamanian rainforests, Appalachian hellbender streams and Namibian savannas in search of a good story. When not writing about the life sciences, I enjoy reading, hiking, traveling and spending time with friends and family.
